Our 1st Annual Glow Party was a huge success!! The students enjoyed lighting up the gym with their glow sticks, glow bracelets, glow necklaces, etc... We even had an awesome DJ!
Our very own Pre-Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Davis, was recognized at last week's school board meeting. She spoke on the work done and impact in her classroom of BRAC's (Baton Rouge Area Chamber) Leadership Class Candidate Dorothy Kemp. Ms. Kemp spoke of her passion for early literacy and love for the students. Ms. Kemp and other participants meet with the class monthly to share a story and complete a fun activity with them. Many thanks to Taylor Blanchard of VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) for coordinating this meaningful and impactful partnership! Zella of Mrs. Davis' class was also there to support!
It was a pleasure to have Supt. Warren Drake visit Buchanan. He visited our Writing Lab and several classrooms. He also answered many questions posed by the students.
Our friends from LSU's Community & University Partnerships department were here bright and early to kick-off the Literacy Lagniappe Program. They met our students as they arrived, handed out bookmarks, and motivated everyone to read. They also explained the incentives that can be earned from attaining AR (Accelerated Reader) points: LSU mechanical pencils, Raising Canes coupons, water bottles, bracelets, drawstring bags, and even free dress days! Most students have already started taking AR quizzes and are on their way to earning these prizes. To celebrate the end of year goals we look forward to the BIG prizes that can be earned at our Literacy Lagniappe prize give-away. Many thanks to our Literacy Lagniappe lead, Lauren Toomey, graduate student of LSU, and her crew for coming out this morning. Brandon Smith, director of the department, also showed up with his continued support. They work hard in keeping our students excited about reaching new reading goals and growing as life-long readers!

We hope to see you tonight, Wednesday, August 28th at 5:30 for our Open House. Principal Britten will open up with a overview for all parents in the gym. Then join your child's teacher in the classroom for their presentation. Tables will be set up in the gym for T-Shirt orders (today is the last day for 1st orders), samples for our Poppin' Popcorn fundraiser, Kids Orchestra, and PTO. Come see what we have in store for the 2019-2020 school year and why it is already our #BestYearEver!
Buchanan Elementary's first two days of school were indeed the best. Staff began the week at New Ark Baptist Church for their Buchanan Back to school service. New Ark joins us as a partner this school year and has already donated school uniforms. Teachers and staff were busy collaborating and preparing at the beginning of the week. Students and families arrived eager and excited to start another school year. Volunteers were all around ensuring the 1st day went off without a hitch! Together we are determined to make this school year our #bestyearever!
We are looking forward to an AWESOME School Year at Buchanan Elementary!! Please see the welcome letter and important Dates by clicking on the school house. Go to the Back to School Information page for more details.
